The character can get them in the boxes with items that are at the entrance to the track. Each item has its own amplification effect. For example, a mushroom accelerates the car and allows it to move very quickly. The player can also find colored shells. The color of the shells determines the effect they give the player. There are green and red shells, which can knock down an opponent, thereby removing a competitor in the race.
If the player discovers items such as a banana peel or a fake box, they can throw them on the track, thus creating obstacles in the way of the opponent. An important nuance is that any enhancement is given only for a while. After this time the effect will disappear. The player can also get a weapon. The type of weapon directly depends on the player’s position in the race – if the player is in the lead, they will get the best weapon. In addition to weapons, one can also get protective items, which are most often dropped in leaders’ positions. Weapons that can be used against the enemy are most often dropped by laggards. Thus, if a player lags behind, they still have a chance to catch up with the leading player and become the race leader. All tracks of the game are divided into clear groups, in which the player must take first place in order to play. There are also several modes in the game – grand prix, time trial, race VS, and battle. Each mode has its own mechanics and objective.
